Social Networking TerminologyPosted: January 29, 2010 | |
I recently noticed that I personally used social media and social networking as synonyms… well they mean two different things. Bellow is my cheat sheet of basic terms we should all know and understand.
•Social media is media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques.
•A social network is a social structure made of individuals (or organizations) called "nodes," which are tied (connected) by one or more specific types of interdependency.
•A social network service focuses on building and reflecting of social networks or social relations among people, e.g. Facebook.
•Social software encompasses a range of software systems that allow users to interact and share data.
•Social networking is the practice of expanding the number of one’s business and/or social contacts by making connections through individuals.
Let’s agree on these terms and their meaning and I promise our discussions will be richer.
